Zed Skimboards and some of the worlds top riders are hitting up one of the most epic beaches in Canada, Wittys Lagoon, on June 13 to compete for a cash purse.

A handful of world-class skimboarders will be catching air in the tide pools at Witty’s Lagoon this Sunday for the Island Skim Session.
Flat-ground skimboarders from Canada, Washington State and Australia are scheduled to compete and to hold demos at the regional park beach in Metchosin, hitting rails and ramps during low tide June 13.
“Some of the top talent in the world will be there,” said event organizer Jeff Zamluk, owner of Zed Skimboards. “Having such a concentrated population this good will show kids what is possible on skimboards.”
Tides on Sunday will be the some of the lowest during the summer, which create large, shallow tide pools near the beach unchanged for several hours, Zamluk said – ideal conditions for skimboarding. “Witty’s is one of the best places (to skimboard) in the Pacific Northwest,” he said.
Pro athletes will vie for prize money and glory using a 1. 4 metre high jump affectionately known as Big Ben, and various rails. Many of the tricks are similar to skateboarding, with skimboarders seeking to hit tweaked airs and technical tricks such as kick flips onto rails.
Zamluk has been running a skimboarding competition in Campbell River for six years and this is the first year at Witty’s. Plenty of riders lobbied for an event closer to Victoria, Zamluk said, and Capital Regional District parks helped make it happen. The original Saratoga beach skimboard competition is July 24.
The Island Skim Session at Witty’s Lagoon is June 13, rain or shine, with registration at 11 a.m. and skimming from noon to 2 p.m. Entry is $15 for the categories of open pro, open women, males 14 and younger and males older than 14.
Zed Skimboards will also be providing free demo boards with a deposit on site.
