SkimClothing.com just added a new brand to their growing site. Here’s an interview with their owner Caine Fair.
Who started your brand?
I originally started CMNTY and the idea behind the brand, eventually bringing along long time friend Dylan Roley and brother Ryan Fair to help with the efforts and get the gears turning. Dylan and I both worked for Hurley in their customization department and all three of us have a great deal of background in business and creative design.
Do you guys skimboard?
Yes, we have all grown up skimming and surfing, growing up in Laguna it is hard to not catch the skimming bug. While we all are pretty busy with school and jobs now-a-days, we still manage to get in the water a couple times a week.
Do you guys sponsor any skimboarders?
Yes, currently right now we have 3 skimming team riders. Tim Fulton, who just recently placed 3rd in the overall professional United Skim Tour, Johnny Salta who is an up and coming professional rider with a great passion for the ocean, as well as Tyler Stanaland who is an overall world class water man with a fearless skimming mindset. All three of these guys not only live and breathe for their love of skimboarding, but they all 3 truly represent the ideals of the company. We are really grateful for them representing us and spreading the movement through their passion.
Where is you brand based out of and how did it get started?
CMNTY is based out of our home town of Laguna Beach in Southern California. It sprouted through the local skimboarding scene and the coastal community appreciation for the ocean and waves. I have been involved with philanthropic events related to ocean conservation ever since I can remember, helping raise money for the Surfrider Foundation since grade school. I thought I would combine my love and appreciation for the marine environment, love for action sports and passion for clothing design. I was fortunate enough, with the support and assistance of the other CMNTY members, to produce a company that that incorporates all three interests.
How is your brand involved in the skimbaording industry?
Growing up and living in Laguna Beach, ocean-based action sports were definitely a huge part of our lives. The culture surrounding skimboarding is something that no other action sport can compare with. The family-like environment and pure love for the action sport makes it completely different than the other media and money driven extreme sports. The innovation and uniqueness of skimboarding made it a very inviting industry to be involved with. Despite the rapid interest and growth of the sport, I’m sure it will always keep that family-like, laid back vibe and thats something that really catches our eye.
What inspires your designs?
Our designs are inspired by the free flowing world we live in. We try to incorporate a natural feeling through our garments, producing all of our gear with recycled materials and printing with water-based ink in order to reduce the amount of waste entering into our environment. While we have a balance of formal apparel and lounge wear, it is apparent that we are here to have a good time and do our best to help the fight against ocean pollution through the sales of our one of a kind garments.
