LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. – SkimChicks, a grassroots organization with a shared vision for elevating and legitimizing female skim boarding, launched today with multiple endeavors aimed at driving a movement for an all-female pro tour and encouraging global recognition of the female athletes of the sport.
“SkimChicks is passionate about empowering the female athletes of skim boarding with the same opportunities and resources as their male counterparts,” says SkimChicks co-founder, Pamela Simpson. “As an athlete-first organization, we are taking a proactive approach to advancing the sport, uniting its female pioneers from around the world, and establishing a platform in which these athletes can compete and showcase their skills.”
The SkimChicks journey began with a documentary aptly named, SkimChicks, which chronicles the sport of female skim boarding and the participants’ quest to gain recognition through competition. Featuring female surf pros including Holly Beck and Jericho Poppler, the film showcases competitors from around the world determined to put female skimming on the map. A second film is currently in the works.
SkimChicks has also been integral in the development of the Women’s International Skim Boarding Association (WISBA), which aims to unite the women of skim boarding, regulate events and channel resources to establish the first professional tour for women. In addition, the company’s online portal at www.skimchicks.com is bringing together female skim boarders of all ages from across the globe; offering access to information about upcoming contests, jams and events; and providing a forum for women to highlight their talents and learn from their peers.
A groundswell of interest is evidenced by a recent Los Angeles Times piece on the women of skim boarding, television network attention, the early critical acclaim of the film, and the burgeoning growth of the brand’s social networking site at www.facebook.com/officialskimchicks.
SkimChicks is currently fielding sponsor inquiries at info@skimchicks.com.
